from our trip to Dublin, June 2006
The Dublin trip took us through a
cosmopolitan city steeped in history, both tragic and glorious,
with haunting memories of patriots, statesmen, scientists and
scholars. We visited Trinity, the oldes university in
Ireland where the 9th century illuminated Gospel Book of Kells is
displayed, where the famous Jonathan Swift was Dean from 1713 to
1745, St. Patrick's Cathedral built in 1191, a trip to the
Guinness Brewery as well as entertainment of rousing irish ballads
and dancing. A trip to Grafton Street where we visited the
National Art Gallery. A day trip to Counties
Kildare and Wicklow in the south of Dublin. A visit to the Irish
National Study on the outskirts of Kildare Town in the Curragh of
Kildare, home of the racecourse where many major events in the
racing calendar are held including the Budweiser Irish Derby.
We had a guided tour of the stallion boxes, and the foalin unit.
We then took a trip to the mountains
known as the Garden of Ireland and visited Glendalough- the Valley
of the Two Lakes, one of the best known monasteries of early
Ireland founded by St. Kevin in the 6th century. Before
returning to Dublin we visited the quaint village of Avoca in the
Vale of Claire location for the popular TV series Ballykissangel.
To the north of Dublin lie the lush
pasturelands of Co. Meath known as the Royal County- an area privy
to the secrets of over 5000 years of Ireland's history.
There we traveled the village of Slane where St. Patrick, (patron
saint of Ireland), lit a paschal fire in defiance of the druids at
nearby Tara, former seat of the High Kings of Ireland.
The trip was enjoyed by all.
Looking forward to the November Ireland Trip to Killarney/Kinsale.
